Yes, You Can Witness!

In Acts 1:8 right before Jesus ascended to the Father, He said these words to the early church, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” God wants His children to be active witnesses for Him.

Here are ten keys to help you be a more effective witness.

1 – Get saved

Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” You may be thinking why would he be telling me to get saved. I am telling you to get saved because when I first started telling other people to get saved, I was not saved myself. I had decided to change my life. I knew Jesus was the answer but nobody every explained to me how to get saved. I thought I just needed to change my ways and start being good but salvation is much more than that. In order to be saved, I must admit that I am a sinner, recognize that Jesus Christ is God, and that He paid for my sins. He was buried and He rose from the dead for me. I must call on Him and ask Him to be my Lord, Saviour, and God. If you have never done that I encourage you to do that. Get saved.

2 – Get baptized

Baptism is a picture to the world of what happens to us when we get saved. Baptism does not save us but it is our identification with Jesus Christ. When we get baptized, we show publicly that I believe Christ paid for my sins, was buried, and three days later He rose from the dead having paid from my sin. It is an outward profession of an inward faith. It identifies you with Jesus Christ and with His local church that baptized you. It is your way of becoming a member of a good solid Bible-believing church. You will never be an effective witness, until you first witness what Christ has done for you through baptism.

3 – Become activity involved in your local church

After you have won somebody to Christ, you have a place to bring them. Be in church Sunday morning, Sunday night, and Wednesday night. Be growing as a student of the Word of God. The more you grow in your understanding of the Word by faithful church attendance, the more you will be able to tell other people about Christ. If your church has services Sunday morning, Sunday night, and Wednesday night, be there all the time. If they have Sunday school be in Sunday school as well. Let your local church be your church family. Depend on them and let them depend on you.

4 – Ask God to make you soul conscious

Pray that on a daily basis. You will become aware that every person you talk to is either going to go to Heaven or Hell. You will want to witness to everyone because of your genuine awareness of their condition.

5 – Start carrying gospel tracts

1 Peter 3:15 says, “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear”. One way we can be ready always to give an answer is by carrying gospel tracts. Sometimes we are in rushed conditions where we do not have opportunity to share the Gospel, but we can share the Gospel by giving a gospel tract. Take them with you everywhere. Leave them by your front door and by your wallet so you will not forget to take them with you every single day.

6 – Ask God to fill you with His Spirit to witness

When we get saved, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside of us. The Holy Spirit dwells in our lives daily. However, the filling of the Spirit is something we need every day. Daily we must confess our sins to Him and daily we must ask Him to fill or control us with His Holy Spirit. Do not be afraid of this, it is not some weird experience. It is just you asking for His Spirit to fill you and receive His Spirit by faith. He can witness through you when you cannot witness yourself.

7 – Pray daily for souls to be saved

I have a prayer journal and every day I pray for lost souls to be saved. The more you pray for souls to be saved, the more opportunities you are going to have to share the Gospel. The more you share the Gospel, the more you will see people trust Christ as Saviour.

8 – Look for opportunities to witness

Today, I have been in my house practically all day long writing articles. However, I left to go to the grocery store for about forty-five minutes. I took gospel tracts with me. While I was at the grocery store I took the opportunity to give the Gospel to a young man at the produce department. I asked him where the carrots and the beets were. Then I asked him, “Could I give you something good to read?” He took it gladly. Look for opportunities to witness.

9 – Leave tracts wherever you go

Not only should you carry tracts, but make it a habit of leaving them in different places.  Next time you get a coffee or eat at a restaurant, when the server hands you the receipt, hand them a tract and say: “Here is something really good to read, it changed my life.”  Or, when you are writing checks to pay your bills, stuff a tract in it.  Just make it a habit to always leave a tract somewhere.

10 – Start attending your church soul winning events

If your church has visitation, go to visitation. If your church has weekly soulwinning, go to weekly soulwinning. Volunteer to visit. Visit hospitals, nursing homes, and every place you can.

I encourage you to implement a few of these even this week and see how God uses you to be a witness for Him!
